Residual Oil Zone Interview #4 with Steve Melzer
The APTA principals are involved in training sessions for CO2 EOR many times during the course of a year. Some of these are as long as a week while others are presentations at various conferences. Their expertise in the science and engineering aspects of the residual oil zones (ROZs) both in the Permian Basin and elsewhere are often requested and therefore included in the training.
As to the original referencing document, a U.S. Department of Energy report (http://www.melzerconsulting.com/pdf/ROZ_Melzer_Document_51.pdf) , Steve Melzer documented the three types of ROZs we have found as we study reservoirs throughout the world. The following animations provide the introduction to the origins or these ROZ types

Type 2 ROZ (seal breach)
Type 3 (laterally flushed) ROZ
The type 3 ROZ is particularly important at this time since it is the most common type and the ones currently being commercially exploited (all within the San Andres formation in the Permian Basin). However, we note too that the other are also common, but have not advanced to the exploitation stage as yet.
